uvex’s expansive range of protective eyewear help simplify the selection process ensuring that you have the right protection dependent on the application. We have put together 4 key steps to help you determine what eye protection is best for you and the job at hand.
- Understanding the Hazards
There are various risks workers are exposed to on a daily basis which can pose a threat to eye health and safety. Without care and management of these risks the threats can have a serious and long-term impact on our ability to work and live everyday normal lives.
Types of workplace hazards

- Flying debris and particles

2. UV radiation

3. Bright light or glare

4. Chemicals and vapour

5. Impact hazards

6. Infrared radiation
Impact rating for eye protection – Selecting the right eye protection dependent on the application.
Eye protection impact ratings are determined by the PPE’s ability to withstand an impact from a specified weight ball without cracking, detaching or dislodging, breaking or coming into contact with the eye or the head. For example, “High Impact” can withstand an impact from an object moving up to 120 metres per second.
Under the AS/NZS 1337.1.2010 the maximum rating safety eyewear glasses and goggles can achieve is medium impact (45 M/S), as they do not cover the entire face. The below table specifies the requirements for each rating.

- What environment are you working in
The environment plays a significant role in determining the risks to eye safety, and different environmental factors can either increase or reduce the likelihood of eye injuries. Understanding the implications of these areas and selecting the right solutions can make a massive impact on your ability to work safely and efficiently.
We have defined 3 key scenarios which can have an impact on our vision:
Extreme Fogging – Constant movement between areas of different temperatures and humidity levels.
Extreme Scratching – Highly abrasive, dirty and dusty environments
Fogging and Scratching – Physical work in dusty and abrasive environments.
Whether its cold, hot, humid or dry to highly abrasive or clean environments uvex have developed market leading lens coating technologies designed to maximise vision even in the most extreme conditions.

- Lighting Conditions
Lighting conditions are critical to maintaining eye safety, especially in workplaces where workers are exposed to various types of lighting. Proper lighting helps prevent eye strain, fatigue, and injury, while inadequate or improper lighting can contribute to accidents, poor visibility, and long-term eye problems.
The Australian standards (AS/NZS 1337.1) outline the transmittance requirements for untinted and sunglare oculars.

- Fit
The best safety glasses for you are the ones that fit you best. For too long, safety eyewear has been treated as “one size fits all.” When your safety glasses fit poorly or incorrectly, you’re putting yourself at a higher risk of injury. Head and face shapes vary considerably so it’s impossible to find one pair that works for everyone.
The general issue and fitting of safety spectacles should be conducted by a person who is competent to select and fit the correct size and type of eyewear for the wearer. Please refer to our fitting guide below to help find the best fit for you.
Fitting guide checklist:
Please check out the checklist below for reviewing the fit of your eyewear
- No uncomfortable pressure points on the side of the head or behind the ears
- Nose piece is comfortable and contacts your nose without pinching. Do you prefer a fixed or adjustable nose piece?
- You should be able to see in all directions without major obstruction
- Overall weight of safety eyewear is evenly distributed between your ears
- Frames fit close to your face without hitting your eyelashes. The space around the frames and your face should be less than or equal to 6-8mm. Gaps between the frame and the face are as small as possible
